December 12, 2004 Dodge Dakota & Durango Recall Details DaimlerChrysler is recalling 600,000 Dodge Durango SUVs and Dodge Dakota pickup trucks because of a defect with the upper ball joints that can cause the front wheels to separate from the vehicle's suspension and eventually fall off. The recall affects four-wheel drive Dakotas and Durangos from the 2000-2003 model years. It has been reported that some of the SUVs and trucks have had problems with an important suspension joint that can be blamed on corrosion in northern states where salt is used to remove ice from the roads. Chrysler has acknowledged that "in extreme cases" such corrosion could trigger "separation of the front suspension." The cost ranges from $750 to $1,200 to replace the ball joint, and DaimlerChrysler will be repairing the vehicles for free. Only four-wheel drive versions of the Durango and Dakota are affected by the recall. Here's the NHTSA recall information, and here is the news story. DaimlerChrysler is also extending the warranty to 10 years or 100,000 miles on the suspension upper ball joints on an additional 400,000 Dodge Durango front-wheel drive SUVs and Dodge Dakota front-wheel drive pickup trucks from model years 2000 to 2003. In a related note, NHTSA also announced a separate recall of 2004 Durangos because a cable can short-circuit, causing a fire under the hood. There are 71,763 vehicles involved in that recall.
