Anyone know of a good walkie talkie (make and model) and if so, where to get it over here in the UAE. Why I'm asking, is that the bike club that I bike with are planning on purchasing some, we have some Motorola model in mind, but me being me, I like to scope out what is in the market. This motorola that they're taking about, apparently had a 3km range, which is ok in my opinion...but anyways, any opinions or suggestions would be appreciated.
And by bike, I refer to push/ pedal...no motors, therefore, we rarely drift much further than a few kms from one another...*we hope*

You can do a visit to Axiom and Radio shack over at City center, there are three or four main models - Radioshack (the one I use) very heavy duty unit. - Motorolla . Best of all in my opinion. - Kenwood (sells in pairs, two bundled units) Those are the units most offroaders use on FRS basis (Family Radio Service), these are the kind which dont need a radio license as per UAE law because their range rarely exceeds 5 Km. Then there are the gizmoes : -T he Garmin GPS/Radio a VERY useful tool in my opnion, if you loose someone and your still in range eh can send you his waypoint from his unit to your unit, but I haven't seen them around here yet, dont know if they are importing them. It's a costly unit, but very useful if you can get your hands on 2 units. www.garmin.com/products/rino/- A new spy gadget came out, also useful to offroaders, a radio wrist watch. supposedly available in the UAE for 550 dhs . www.uaemall.com got o uaemall you will see it on the main page, if not go to "electronics" section then "walkie talkie" you'll find it there. However, the range is only 1.5 Km as opposed to the other unit listed above who's range vary from 2 Km to 3 Km. Happy to be your shopping guide Fouad

Is there anything that they can't think of banning over here.
Anyways, I have another (dumb) question. Are 2 ways compatible with one another. i.e. is it as long as you're on the same frequency that 2 ways can communicate to one another regardless of make/ model?

Hi:
I'm looking for a pair of walkie-talkies, preferably Motorola. I've tried the sources listed in an earlier post, no luck. Does anybody know where these are available in Dubai or Abu Dhabi?

Alissar make sure to set your privacy channel to 0. If not then you will be able to hear others but they will not be able to hear you.
Jo oppsoite Jackies(Dxb) electronics in Nasr square, thats where HSBC is there is a shopping centre(forgot name) with thingies in abundance. Make sure to bargain though. Got mine from a shop called Eurostar electronics for 399/- and make sure they give you the adaptor also otherwise BOOM cause the chargers are set to 110V.

Motorola 'Talkabout' T5920 is compatible with what most people in the off-road comunity use. The Oregon Scientific ones on sale in the big Lamcy Plaza near Karama are set for a different frequency range.
You might try Lutfi Trading in Baniyas (aka Nasr) Square. Around Dh300 for two hand-helds, charging cradle, and TWO transformers: one to drop 240V mains to 110V and one to drop 110V to 9V.
