Hi all, Anyone have any info on the biggest size tyre that will fit under a 1998 Nissan Patrol SWB without any lift, without causing too much rub or any restriction on wheel travel? Everything is still completly stock. Will fitting larger tyres damage any drive components, or are the stock components strong enough? Any recomendations as to tyre choice? I have Michelin Synchrones at the moment (265/70R16). Thanks

Hi,
I have BFGoodrich, 285/75 R16 AT with 2" lift kit on 2002 Patrol. They fit perfectly, however, u should consider the overhead of the weight added by the bigger tires. Speed/ODO meter ticks changes due to the change.
cheers,

ODO on Patrols always lie, useless piece of equipment (plus they nick the warranty that way as they are always indicating a higher speed). Got to love it! JF

All ODO's read high-I understood it was (a) to keep you within the speed limit, and (b) to avoid people suing the manufacturer if they got speeding fines.
By chance, I was going to ask the same question about my Lexus LX470. Standard tyres are 275/70/16. Is there an advantage fitting larger tyres? How big can I go (based on the wheel size, rather than clearances)

Ok thanks for the help. Khaiwi, where'd you get the lift kit from? Anyone else know any good accessory shops in abu dhabi? Where do I find BFG In AUH? Also I have a 4200 engine, any performance parts I can add and where to find them in UAE? Thanks guys.

you could fit them sand tires as pointed out above or fix a 2.5" lift kit and stack a set o 35's x 75x 16 on the nissan rims.
with the patrol having a dead axle you are never going to have to much of a problem getting them sorted out.

Just like to ad that fitting big tires is ok as long as the ring and pinion ratio follow. If you have a 4200, 4500 or 4800 Patrol with manual gear and you go any thing over 33 inches OD you will burn your clutch faster you imagine. I advise to stick to 33 inches max. If you fit 9.00x16 sand tires (the biggest size you can fit without lift kit), make sure you go in low gear when i the sand and be easy on the asphalt. Choose the Bridgestone because its speed index is up to 160 km/h.
A good idea if you have some money is to change the ring and pinion ratio. The Patrol has a several ratios from 3.55 to 1 all the way to 4.6 to 1 (Diesel Patrol sold in Europe and pick-ups offer good choices.) My Patrol is a 4800 automatic, it has stock 3.55 to 1 ratio. Now, it is on 34 inch tires with a 4.3 to 1 ratio and I'm still underdrived by 20% on real GPS speed reading.
If your Patrol is an automatic, you will face less problems when going into bigger tire sizes because the torque converter is actins as a gear reduction. But watch the trans oil temperature...
Any one knows whereI can get a set of 35 BFG A/T ?

Thanks Difflock, I have the 4200 patrol swb. Will 33s fit with no lift? also i did put a OME 2in lift on, but the rear driveshaft stretched and caused way too many vibrations. Any ideas? I did take it off again and the springs are now sitting in my office.

Thanks 4 the great info difflock, I have 2002 Patrol LWB, Auto gear with tiptronic on 4800 engine. I used the 285/75 BFG for a while, noticed some performance decreas, though very minor, and currently have the BFG macadams standard size 275/75.
I have 2" OldmanEMU coils and shocks and Steering stabliser too.
Vibration between 100 and 120 is common in all tire sizes and the dealer simply escaped with it as I had bigger tires, and now "non-standard" tire types etc, anyhow, I have just crossed the 60k and now on my own. So, any advise on getting rid of the vibration?
Sand tires are another source of vibration as everybody confirms and thats why I did not have them yet. Would you comment on this too?
Cheers,

Hi Diverea,
1- 33 inches tires will fit a patrol 4200, 4500 or 4800, short or long wheel base without suspension modifications. 2- Lifting a 2 door patrol will simply not work as the rear shaft is to short. By lifting it, the angles of the universal joints work out of range thus generating the vibration you feel and ultimately will just break. To convert a short wheel base patrol into a lifted unit, you need to invest some money in changing the rear shaft with a new one fitted with two CV joints so it will be able to sustain the new angles and the input torque.
Keep in mind that fitting your vehicle with bigger tires is requiring more torque from the engine when accelerating but it is also transfering more torque to the driveline when breaking. This is generating unwanted vibrations and wearing out the brake pads much faster. The only way to be gentle with the brakes pads is to use a max of engine braking.

Hi Khaiwi,
1- The bridgestone sand tire is not generating vibration but you need to keep it at 40 psi or more. It is sensitive to side wind but has an overall very low noise and is quiet confortable to be driven on a daily basis in tosn. 2- Vibration at 80 to 100 on a Nissan patrol is common. It seams to be part of the Patrol genetical package and there is no cure for it. Even when fitted with stock tires the patrol will vibrate between 80 and 100 km/h. One way to get rid of some is to fit a double steering damper instead of a single. I believe OME and Rancho should have ready made kits. 3- Your 4800 performence decrease because of the bigger tires fitting. On the asphalt, there is not much you can do and will just have to live with it. In the sand, whenever you need to banzai a dune with all the power you have, lock the tiptronic in 2nd gear and floor it...it will go all the way up. Do not do it all day long because you will overheat the transmission oil.

Good info again difflock. sounds like u know a lot about nissans. I think i'll keep the suspension as it is and get bigger tyres next time i change. Any ideas on how to get more power from the 4200 carburreted engine? Also I always pull away in 2nd gear as 1st is too low (start in 1st change to 2nd about 2 seconds later, seems like a waste of time). will bigger tyres 'fix' that?

Bigger tires will fix that too low gear attitude your car has now.
To get more HP out a 4200, the most simple trick would be to shave the cylinder head and bring it to a ratio about 1o% lower. I do not know what the current ratio is but if it is 9 to 1, you can safely bring it down to 9.9 to 1 etc...up to you to make the exact calculation. This is good for the 4200 but not for the 4500 qand the 4800 because the 4200 is an undertuned. Other mods you may considere is to fit a K&N air filter and any kind of good performance exhaust system to let the engine breath. An engine is like a human body, you cannot race a sprint when your nose is blocked by a flue...

Whoa, gr8 advice from difflock. Man I am really learning something and even though I dont have a patrol but something half its power at least engine wise, I too am contemplating fitting bigger tyres and will when the time comes to change. I am currently running 235/70R16. I have test fitted 265/70R16 and there seems to be no rubbing issues. A member in ME4X4 has fitted then onto his Terrano but he is running 265/70R15. Well he says that I makes a vast difference as far as driving in the sand goes. Difflock try Tyre Express in Dubai. They seem to stock all the types and brands. I am satisfied with them and they give you good service www.emarat.ae/service/tyre.php
