Well after long today i got the time to set up my iPAQ and the Navman Sleeve. Next got my hands on OziExplorer and OziCE. Downloaded, installed and registered
Next thing i got to was Maps. I had a small map image in GIF of the Dubai City, i loaded it into ozi and calibrated it. Later used the Img2Ozf program to convert it and make it usable in OziCe.
While going to office i tested it out with Ozi and made waypoints all along the way and everything worked fine.
Coming to the core, i was wondering what is the main diffrence between saving the waypoints, route and track log?
Another thing i noticed was when i added the way points, i edited them to naming convention (as in WP0 to Home, WP1 to Shindagah Tunnel, etc etc). Later i saved the waypoint list. When i reopened the list all the names were lost and they waypoints were shown as WP0, WP1, WP2, etc and so on. Is that normal or did i make some mistake?
Since ive never used any other GPS, and as this is my 1st experience i was wondering, whats the real diffrence between using Ozi (tht is a PDA based GPS) or using Garmin, and the other brands out there?
Before buying the Navman Sleeve i had heard a lot of complains that it takes long to get a first fix, but luckily its never taken me more then 30 seconds to get a fix! Also when i entered Shindagah Tunnel i lost all satelities, and as soon as i came out, it picked 6 satelities within 2-3 seconds of coming out. Therefore i was really happy with it As i said ive never used any other GPS so i doono how the others perform, so no benchmark to compare to.
Since im getting aquainted to the whole thing now, i was wondering if anyone has any good maps of Dubai City (or UAE) or if there is any place i could get them from. I tried to go on the site Stuart mentioned in the previous post, but i failed to understand what exactly is a MrSid Image? If any one could shade some light on it, it would be great.
Lastly, the worst part of the day while returning back from my office was, my iPAQ-Navman mount fell down! Luckily nothin happened plus i have a screen protector for the safe side Presently have a windsheild mount, so i guess its not going to be a reliable one. I doono if you can get some solid mounts in Dubai? tho i have an A/c vent mount as well, i doono how to fix it onto the vent. I guess if i can get this done it will be very reliable. BTW what is a RAM Mount?
Hopefully as i explore more i will share my experience with u'll
Till then takecare n drive safe
