Hello, Please excuse this newbie question. I am just trying to choose between two cars. Nissan Patrol and Mistubishi Pajero. I am interested in the LWB versions only. I think the Patrol overall is a much better car, but since I am only starting I wonder if I will notice the difference. If you have any recommendations please let me know. I dont want to buy the 2003 model unless there is a "must have" option. I imagine the majority of the time I will the car as a street car until I get deep into 4x4'ing. Thanks Samer

Nissan Patrol.
We had a Mitsubishi Pajero.... never again. Awful thing. I hope the newer models are far better in terms of reliability but our 1994 model got to the point where we didn't trust it to bring us home from the supermarket, let alone a 4x4 trip.
The new ones may be more reliable, I certainly hope so, but they're still gutless 3 liter engines. Go with the 4.7 (?) Liter Patrol.

It's a question of money really, both cars are reliable I have tested both.
Yes the 1999 Pajero had a clutch problem and overheating problem, but the new one is much more better. If you can wait a few month Mitsubishi will be introducing the 3.7 Litre Pajero with a more powerful engine. It waill be available in autumn of this year.
The Nissan Patrol is of course a very reliable car with proven track record, needs no introduction. Laurie, the Patrol is 4.8 Ltr.
The Patrol is a 140,000+ vehicle, whereas the Pajero is a 95,000+ Dhs car. So it's really a question of money with the Patrol slightly on the better side. It's a Desert Ready vehicle. On the Pajero, you might want to add a few things.

Oops.. 4.8... Even better...
"No replacement for Displacement!"
My vote is still with the bigger beast....
By the way, The Nissan Patrol's price range should get you a new V8 Grand Cherokee if you're interested. The Patrol is much bigger, which is good if you need that space but just extra weight if you don't...
The V8 Grand is very powerful and despite looking on a par with the X5 and Mercedes, it can hold it's own with the Wranglers on the sand.
The Patrol is good... The Jeep is good... the Pajero is weak. Ours was gutless and the one that was with us on a trip to the desert out here (around 99-2000 model) couldn't get up the 'easy route' to the top of the dune... Not because it was digging in, but because there just wasn't enough power from that 3.0 L. Needed one hell of a run up.
Have fun browsing! Be sure to make sure you consider all options. Do your homework before you go to the dealerships so you know what the technical terms and features mean and if you really want them or not.

Yeah, I guess yu're a fan of the Inline engines it's ironic how Chevy switched from V6 on the Blazer to I6 on the Trailblazer, and how Jeep cherokees switched from I6 (old) to V6 on the new Cherokees Anyhow, what Samer has also to consider is the resale Value, Grand Cherokees maybe ok, but Pajeros and Patrols have a much more higher resale value on the long run. I imagine the Nissan has the best re-sale, but at the same time it costs more in the first place... The I-6 on the Jeep works... but if it was all mine and not my parents, and I had the money, there would be a Chevrolet 5.7L V8 in the front ROAR!! ;D

Please hold your laugh until the end of my post.
Last weekend I went and put a deposit on a V6 3.2L 212hp VW Touareg.
I think the idea of going for a real 4x4 trip is now sidelined. Even though the brochure says it can.. it just looks like it cant. I am sure no one has any experience with this puppy since there are about 4 in DXB and AUH together (only 1 sold). I should get mine in July.
You can laugh now....
Does anyone have any experience with such class of street 4x4 in the desert?
Thanks Samer

The Touareg has the same platform and chasis as the Porsche Cayenne, the difference is in the engine, syspension and interior.
I personally believe it's another X5, and dont expect much ut of it. But I dont want to make an official judgement until I test it myself. There has been desert tests made on the Cayenne around a year ago in the quaa area. Porsche officials say it did well.
So I guess we'll have to wait and see. By looking at it, I beleive the problem is not in engine power as much as it is in the wheel/tire selection and wheel travel.
